Everett Side Bending Jig

Unheated Side Bender:
If you are not ready to spring for a heated side bender or if you are like me and have a heated bender that is constantly being used, you will want additional options available to you. If your heated bender is kept occupied with side bending operations you may want to use an unheated bender to take care of solid linings, purflings, binding or just additional side bending operations.
Consider One To Supplement Your Heated Bender:
On the other hand, if you want to use boiling as your primary method of side bending, then this bender is just what you need. I used one of these forever and still have a number of them in my shop, getting almost daily use.
One of the disadvantages of this style bender over the Heated Guitar Side Bender is you have to construct the whole form for each guitar shape. Now don’t get me wrong, that is not that big a deal. We are only talking about a few pieces of wood that you need to repeat – and the hardware of course.
The unheated side bending jig is available commercially, but its’ cost may be somewhat prohibitive at $225.00 per guitar shape and that adds up in a hurry if you plan on making several guitar configurations. Also, you can choose to use the stainless steel slats and a heating blanket if you like – or you could graduate to that if you get sick of boiling the sides.
Be aware that there are a few minor differences from the Everett Side Bender pictured at the top of this article. I made the waist compression blocking much more simple, in a manner that I use, not the double block. I find my bender functions just fine.
Also you may want to over-cut your guitar forms just a bit to allow for some spring-back. I have shown this on the first sheet of plans, which indicates the Dreadnought shape only.

Materials and Construction:
Resources are very minimal for building this jig. A small piece of 3/4″ birch cabinet grade plywood, some hardwood blocks, steel spreaders for the form, (8) eyelets, (4) springs, (2) eye bolts, (2) plastic star-shaped knobs and you will be set to rock & roll.
If you have trouble getting the 1/2″ steel spreaders for the guitar forms, I have included an alternate detail on using rigid conduit for the same purpose.
What The Plans Include:
Side Bender Jig At 50% Full Size Scale
Plywood and Compression Block Templates @ 100% Scale
(8) Different Guitar Shapes Templates @ 100% Scale Which Include:
Adding a Heating Blanket:
The great part about this plan is if you decided to add the warming blanket later you still can. All you have to do is get a warming blanket, thermostat and the stainless steel slats for each guitar shape. That can really add up though.
