Great Plan Accuracy and Detail:
All of our Guitar Building Plans are drawn full scale. All are drawn on my CAD system and are accurate to within 1/1000″. There is meticulous detail on all plans and they can be used to make your templates, guitar forms and pinned up on your wall as a guide for building your guitar. All plans include a top, side and butt view of the guitar.
Fully Dimensioned:
All parts are dimensioned and different parts are all called out. Fret scale is accurate as indicated on the plans and you can make your fret cutting jig from one of these plans. There will also be neck cross-sections given at several locations so you can make neck-shaping templates.
All Bracing Fully Detailed:
Brace diagrams are carefully laid out in plan and profile to help you fabricate your top plate braces as accurately as possible. All dimensions are give as well if you wish to transfer the dimensions to the wood.
Gibson J45 Acoustic Guitar:
These Guitar Building Plans are similar to the Gibson J45 Acoustic Guitar. This is the first acoustic guitar that I owned when I bought it from a bluegrass guitarist that was moving up to a Martin D-18. I bought it for $500.00 and it was a 1945 with a moustache bridge to boot. He later tried to buy it back when he relized what he sold me.
I still have that guitar today. It makes a fine flatpicking guitar and you to will love this guitar, when making it from these plans. I’m sure you can make it sound even better than that great granddaddy that is sitting in my music room right now.
These Plans Replicate my Grand Old 1945:
The plans detail the scalloped bracing for the top tone braces, Gibson’s backwards belly bridge as well as other classic features that Gibson introduced with this model. I plan on coming out with a moustache bridge option as well, so look for that in the free plans section of the Plan Shop. For now, the plans show the classic backward belly bridge that Gibson is famous for.
When I feel the bracing inside my 1945 J45, if feels like the luthiers used a hatchet to shape the braces and top. They didn’t even bother to sand them smooth. Just imagine what careful craftsmanship, stress-free construction and a thin finish will do for this handmade guitar!
Included (4) Very Detailed Sheets:
These guitar building plans are very detailed, highest quality PDF’s and consist of complete dimensioned plans with bracing plans, sections laterally and longitudinally, detailed bracing layouts. There are (4) large sheets ready to be copied at your local digital printing center.
Guitar Dimensions:
Upper Bout: 300.9mm (11 27/32″)
Lower Bout: 408.5mm (16 3/32″)
Body Length: 512.8mm (20 3/16″)
Scale Length: 645.2mm (25 13/32″)
Body Depth At Heel: 98mm (3 27/32″)
Body Depth At Butt: 122.8mm (4 27/32″)
Guitar Building Plans For J45 Consist of the Following Sheets:
Sheet 1 – Guitar Plan: Detailed full sized dimensioned plan showing all top bracing, bracing scallops, bridge detail, purfling layout, neck layout with perfectly scaled fret locations, head and tuning machine layouts. Also there is a very detailed specification describing materials, methods of construction and tools required.
Sheet 2 – Guitar Sections: Longitudinal and Lateral Section cuts through the guitar showing internal bracing, lining, side bracing, blocks and neck, included complete dimensions.
Sheet 3 – Guitar Top Bracing Layout: Top and side views of all top braces including dimensions if you need them. The intent is to transfer the brace profile to each brace.
Sheet 4 – Guitar Back and Back Bracing: Detailed Back Layout, showing brace locations, center reinf. strips and head and tail blocks. Also, the back braces are fully laid out in plan and elevation so you size them exactly as needed.
Why Digital Downloads?
The plans are electronic in PDF format so they can be printed by the customer at the printer location of their choice. For instance, many customers have used Kinkos or Office Max. I would prefer to use the services of a commercial digital printer company. They have very large printers that can very easily handle these sheets and print them in under a minute. In my architectural practice, I have printed hundreds of thousands of plans like this. They would be listed in the phone directory under digital printers or even blueprints – although that term is not used any longer.
Why don’t we send out hard copies? Good question. My reasoning is that we market plans all over the world through the internet with a great many plans going to Europe, South America, and China. Digital plans are delivered instantaneously and when you print them they will be full-sizes, no fold marks and you can get multiple copies or even 50% sized plans that are very useful for reference or even a part of a plan, say a headstock that can be printed on any letter sized printer.
So that is the long answer and I think you will be very impressed with the full-sized versions. BTW when you bring them to the printer, they should default to the full-size automatically on their printing equipment.
Electronic Instant Download:
All Guitar Building Plans are available in pdf format. Plans are $13.49 for the pdf files of the guitar plans.
All guitar building plans can be ordered through our secure server and of course all information will be secure and confidential. Upon ordering you will be given an email for immediate downloading of the plans through a link directly to the ftp server. No special hardware required.
You will have 48 hours to download your digital copies. There are (4) files for each guitar plan all files total about 2.5MB – 3.5MB, so download times are very quick, even on a 56K modem. We are sure you will be very pleased with the level of detail and quality of these drawings.
All Plans Are in Both Millimeters AND Inches/Fractional Inches:
All Guitar Building Plans are available in both millimeter measurements and inches/fractional inches. Both are clearly shown in an over/under the dimension line style, so you can pick which measurement system you would like to use, or use both!

Guitar Template Sets are now available for each of our guitar plans. I would recommend that these template plans be reproduced and glue these template layouts over plexiglas or lexan plastic and carefully and accurately cut the templates out for a lifetime luthier’s tool.
Each Template Set will include the following templates:
Top Bracing Layout Template: This Template locates each brace and brace end, eliminating any mis-alignment of baces, sound-hole or reinforcing strips.
Fret Layout Template: All frets laid out and dimensioned ready for you to load into a fret template jig or hand cut on your own.
Headpiece Template: for headpiece contour and accurate tuning machine layouts.
Neck Layout Template: Use this for easily roughing out your neck, heel, and neck joints, and the foot on the Classical Guitar.
Side Contour Template: This is worth the price of the set alone! This side contour can be cut out and laid directly on your guitar sides and you can automatically cut the correct back arch and taper on your sides without trial and error.

Hi,
i just bought (and downloaded) the Gibson J45 acoustic plans. i had a look at them and was very happy with the details and descriptions on the 4 piece plans.
there is one thing to concider though : On the J45Plan.pdf there is the folowing note about the bridgeplate…. “Grain Should Run 90 Degrees To The Top.”
I wonder….in case of the J45, where bridge pins are placed in one line (not random, or in an angle etc)…. if you make the grains of the wood run in the same direction of the bridge pins” placement, aren’t you risking the wood to split due to tension over time ? (a certain weakness for a lot of designs)
i think it would be better to run the grain diagonal…. no splitting risk / same level off reinforcement for both top and bridge area/ no acoustic disadvantage.
just my experience, but maybe it w

Hi Stephen,
What is important is that the grain should not run at the same angle as the top, in other words if the grain lines up between the top plate and the bridge plate, there is more risk of splitting tendency. With woods that have less pronounced grain that are used for bridgeplates, this is of less concern, such as maple or walnut, Rosewood and Mahogany are more at risk for cracking.
You could certainly use a wood that runs at an angle to the bridgepins without a concern about cracking with the top. Good idea and thanks for the tip.
