All plans include a top, side and butt view of the guitar.

Brace diagrams are carefully laid out in plan and profile to help you fabricate your top plate braces as accurately as possible. All dimensions are give as well if you wish to transfer the dimensions to the wood.

Classical Guitar Plans - Ramirez Bracing

Ramirez Bracing:
These Guitar Building plans are for a standard concert sized classical guitar plan. All dimensions and body shape dimensions are similar the Jose Ramirez Concert model popularized by Andres Segovia, Christopher Parkening and many other classical musicians. The bracing pattern is a modified fan with a angled main just behind the soundhole. Fan braces are modified slightly to place emphasis on the treble notes. This guitar will give you balanced volume and good control over your bass and treble spectrum. Feel free to play with the bracing placements and experiment as you wish.

Very Detailed Guitar Plans:
These guitar building plans are very detailed, highest quality PDF’s and consist of complete dimensioned plans with bracing plans, sections laterally and longitudinally, detailed bracing layouts, showing brace plans and profiles, ready for you to cut out. There are (4) large sheets ready to be copied at your local digital printing center.

Guitar Dimensions:

Classical Guitar Plans For Ramirez Bracing Consist of the Following Sheets:

Also there is a very detailed specification describing materials, methods of construction and tools required.

Sheet 2 – Guitar Sections: Longitudinal and Lateral Section cuts through the guitar showing internal bracing, lining, side bracing, blocks and neck, included complete dimensions.

Sheet 3 – Guitar Top Bracing Layout: Top and side views of all top braces including dimensions if you need them. The intent is to transfer the brace profile to each brace.

Sheet 4 – Guitar Back Plate and Back Plate Bracing Diagrams: Detailed layout of the back outline, including all bracing and blocks required for complete back construction. The Brace layouts include the 4mm arch for the back, which is required for a durable guitar.

Why Digital Downloads?

The plans are electronic in PDF format so they can be printed by the customer at the printer location of their choice. For instance, many customers have used Kinkos or Office Max. I would prefer to use the services of a commercial digital printer company. They have very large printers that can very easily handle these sheets and print them in under a minute. In my architectural practice, I have printed hundreds of thousands of plans like this. They would be listed in the phone directory under digital printers or even blueprints – although that term is not used any longer.

Why don’t we send out hard copies? Good question. My reasoning is that we market plans all over the world through the internet with a great many plans going to Europe, South America, and China. Digital plans are delivered instantaneously and when you print them they will be full-sizes, no fold marks and you can get multiple copies or even 50% sized plans that are very useful for reference or even a part of a plan, say a headstock that can be printed on any letter sized printer.

So that is the long answer and I think you will be very impressed with the full-sized versions. BTW when you bring them to the printer, they should default to the full-size automatically on their printing equipment.

Electronic Instant Download:
All Guitar Building Plans are available in pdf format. Plans are $13.49 for the pdf files of the guitar plans.

All guitar building plans can be ordered through our secure server and of course all information will be secure and confidential. Upon ordering you will be given an email for immediate downloading of the plans through a link directly to the ftp server. No special hardware required.

You will have 48 hours to download your digital copies. There are (4) files for each guitar plan all files total about 2.5MB – 3.5MB, so download times are very quick, even on a 56K modem. We are sure you will be very pleased with the level of detail and quality of these drawings.

All Plans Are in Both Millimeters AND Inches/Fractional Inches:
All Guitar Building Plans are available in both millimeter measurements and inches/fractional inches. Both are clearly shown in an over/under the dimension line style, so you can pick which measurement system you would like to use, or use both!

Guitar Template Sets are now available for each of our guitar plans. I would recommend that these template plans be reproduced and glue these template layouts over plexiglas or lexan plastic and carefully and accurately cut the templates out for a lifetime luthier’s tool.

Each Template Set will include the following templates:

Top Bracing Layout Template: This Template locates each brace and brace end, eliminating any mis-alignment of baces, sound-hole or reinforcing strips.

Fret Layout Template: All frets laid out and dimensioned ready for you to load into a fret template jig or hand cut on your own.

Headpiece Template: for headpiece contour and accurate tuning machine layouts.

Neck Layout Template: Use this for easily roughing out your neck, heel, and neck joints, plus the foot on the Classical Guitar.

Side Contour Template: This is worth the price of the set alone! This side contour can be cut out and laid directly on your guitar sides and you can automatically cut the correct back arch and taper on your sides without trial and error.

    Hi,
I’d like buy your plans but I’d like ask you is in them are shown the dimension of the thickness concerning the sides, the back and moreover for the top.
    tnx in advance,
    fabio

  2. David Says:

    Hi Fabio,

Thanks for the question. The actual thickness of the top, sides and back is function of the wood strength that you are using. For backs and sides you can start out at about 3/32″ or 2.2 mm to 2.4 mm. This would work for any of the Rosewoods, Cyprus, Walnut, Maple, or other very hard, straight-grained wood. If the wood has a lot of figure you may want to go slightly thicker say to 2.4 to 2.5 mm.

As for the soundboard wood, the variation is even greater. I would say that the range would be from 2.0 mm to 3.0 mm Sitka Spruce could be on the thinner side and the cedars would be on the thicker side. I make classical guitar with Canadian Red Cedar and I make them about 2.6 mm because the cedar is tight grained and very stiff. If using Sitka Spruce I would use a thickness of about 2.2 mm for a tight-grained, vertical grain top.

See the article on tap tuning for more information on top selection and analysis see the article:

thanks to you for the replay, but, my question wasn’t related to a suggestion (in any case it was very welcome!). My question was posted to know if in your plans there are the real thickness related to the original histruments (torres or ramirez etc etc)

  4. Koichiro Says:

Your plans look very interesting. I like that they are in digital format. Do you have the plans for classical guitars available in 650 scale?

    Regards,
    Koichiro

  5. David Says:

    Hi Koichiro,

No, I’m sorry the plans are all based on 660mm scale. If there is a demand for the 650 scale, I will produce them. So far you are the only request for that scale.
    David

  6. Roy Says:

I would have purchased 650mm scale if it was available. I just assumed it was not, I’ll build to 650.

Another thing that I think would have been nice to see on the plans is information about thicknesses (back, sides, top). I purchased plans because I thought they would provide the information needed to build that instrument, it does not.

I’ll keep that in mind when planing my next build.

  7. David Says:

    Hi Roy,

Thicknesses are not supplied because the species and grain of the wood can govern the ultimate thickness of tops and sides. A good starting point for classical guitars is 3/32″ (2.3mm) for sitka tops and rosewood or other straight-grained backs and sides. If you use cedar the tops will likely need to be slightly thicker. Steel string guitar can be around 1/8″ or slightly less. Also, you can choose to thin the plates a bit and raise the height of the bracing to compensate for the plate thickness. When doing this though you will find that the bracing can “telegraph” through and you can see brace locations. With their extremely thin plates, you will often see this with flamenco guitars, which are usually built with 1/16″ thick plates.
    David
